Remarks & Notes
The last series of preliminary test runs for the World Rail Speed Record resumed on March 28. Max speed of that day was reached approx. when this picture was shot, at 506.1kph. This run was the occasion of the only noticeable incident of the entire campaign. The problem occured while accelerating to super high speed. A fiberglass cover affixed on a wheel to protect sensors broke loose. The wheel in question belongs to the front end engine. Flying pieces cut the main brake air pipe which automatically set the train in emergency brake. A window was also broken on the last passenger car. Looking carefully, you can see that the last window at the lower level of the last passenger car is not black like other windows: the safety glass is shattered, fortunately the window still holds well in place - these windows are made of 2 panes of safety glass, with air in between the 2 shields so that they can well absorb shock waves. This was a minor problem, everything got fixed during the night and the speed tests could resume on the following day.
