The Juanita Shops is an original Pennsylvania Railroad Facility. The original Altoona shops were built in 1850 with the first locomotive repairs occurring in December of 1852. The Juniata Shops were completed in 1890 after the original Altoona shops became too crowded. Today Juanita is a modern locomotive repair facility that specializes in everything from preventivive maintenance to complete rebuilds. Today Juniata is the most modern locomotive heavy repair facility in the railroad industry. Juniata is the only shop to receive contracts from both EMD and GE to build new locomotives. After the 1999 takeover of Conrail, Norfolk Southern has favored Juanita as their main repair facility. Over 1,000 men and women are employed at these shops making it one of there largest locations on the entire NS system.
