Remarks & Notes
When I got transferred to the Quad Cities back in 1991 by the CPRY John Deere was shipping about 10 combines per day out of their East Moline Plant. About 1993 Superintendent Joe Kramer and Trainmaster Steve Moerke in coordination with the Traffic Dept. started operating unit trains of combines from East Moline to Chicago at a rate of at least one train per week with about 50-60 cars. This lasted well into the IMRL and ICE era with myself being the Superintendent until 2005 when I retired. For some reason the after the sale of IC&E back to the CP the Canadians gave the combine business to the BNSF including the switching with the BNSF still hauling them in units to Galesburg then to Chicago where they were handed over to the CSX. A few years ago John Deere in their infinite wisdom decided that ALL combine shipments would go by truck no matter where they go.This photo was taken toward the end of the rail shipments BNSF train 427 was gathering combine loads while CP train B-73 passes on the mainline.
