A ground blizzard was blowing this day on the upper reaches of Union Pacific’s ascent of the Soldier Summit grade in Utah. Winds were very light at Helper Yard at the eastern base of the pass where I watched the cutting in of the 4 unit mid train helper set on this coal train. However as I followed the train up Price River Canyon, the further west, and higher in elevation I went the stronger the winds became. Here at Kyune it was blowing hard but at Summit it was blowing much harder. I was unable to access the tracks at Summit due to snow blocked access roads.
The EMD SD (special duty) series are a strong and reliable kind of locomotive which still serve America's rails today. They have proved themselves by clocking in several million miles of freight service.
