Remarks: On May 8th, 1989, the two steam engines that visited Los Angeles for the 50th Anniversary of Union Station headed home, and they coordinated some side-by-side running up Cajon Pass. Figuring we would only get one shot (because of the large crowds and narrow roads), we planted ourselves just east of the Alray tunnels. But, to steal a line from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, we "chose poorly." It turned out that we had selected the spot where SP 4449 would come to a grinding halt in order to check a running gear problem.
