Thanks for sharing! 1218 was a real brute. I'd take her over 3985 any day of the week.

Amen to that!

Rode behind her from Buffalo NY to Albion Pa. in the early 90s. If I remember, a scheduled 8 hour return trip stretched to over 12 hours....not the fault of 1218 though, just heavy traffic between Buffalo and Erie.

In the words of Gomer Pyle...Shazzam! What a great shot of one great lookin train. That whistle knocked me out. Great job, thanks for the fine work.

Unfortunately 3985 is currently going alot faster than 1218! But wouldn't it be great to see which one of these locomotives could pull the longest train the farthest and fastest? NS needs to bring back their steam program and showcase both their extremely beautiful and powerful machines.

Which Steam locomotive is still running strong? Which Steam locomotive just pulled the Circus train? Which steamer has been operating since 1981? The Union Pacific Challenger No. 3985 is. It is the world's Largest Operating Steam Locomotive, and if The 3985 and 1218 were to run excursions on the UP triple track mainline an hour apart, The 3985 would win Hands Down! I disagree with you.
