Remarks: Autumn color is almost gone from these higher elevations of the Blue Ridge, but it's unseasonably warm on this beautiful Saturday afternoon at Penland. After parking on Clinchfield Drive and walking back to this spot, the silence is soon broken by crossing bells, a defect detector, and the horn of the approaching northbound manifest train, headed further into the wilderness of NC.
